We put together some package tours for you with itineraries, dates, and prices. In all our programs we insert acclimatization time as you will be navigating on altitudes of 3,500 meters and above.
Birding tours in Ladakh are usually possible throughout the year. However, the best time for birding activities is in the months of March and April as well as from mid August to mid October. |
Birding Tour (5 days/4 nights)
While observing the bird population, you may have the chance to spot other wild animals, too! This birding tour has been put together especially for those bird lovers, photographers or nature fans who have less time at their disposal for a trip to Ladakh.
Day-to-day itinerary Day 1 Arrival in Leh. Pick-up by our staff at Leh airport, transfer to hotel. Acclimatization day on 3,500 m altitude. Afternoon sightseeing of Shanti Stupa, Tsemo Castle with car, explore Leh bazaar by foot. Evening at your leisure. Overnight in hotel at Leh. Day 2 Visit of some birding hot spots around Leh, like Shey, Thiksey, Chuchot, Spituk marshes and Gupuks Lake near Phey. Overnight in the hotel at Leh. Day 3 Drive to Tsokar Lake (170 km, 5 to 6 hrs). Early morning start from Leh so that Tso Kar can be reached by lunch time. During this drive there is the possibility to encounter birds and wild animals in Rong of Gya Meru, Rumtse, around Taglang-la pass as well as near Debring. Nature walk around the lake in the afternoon to spot different birds. Overnight in Deluxe Camp or Hotel. Day 4 Early rising in the morning, enjoying a cup of tea and then go for nature walk along the lake to spot birds. Comeback to Deluxe Camp or hotel for breakfast. After that, we will drive till Tasabuk lake which is the breeding ground for many bird species. We can explore this beautiful lake until about mid-day. Afternoon drive back for Leh. Good chances to spot many mammals and birds en route back to Leh. Overnight in hotel at Leh. Day 5 Fly back to your next destination with sweet memories from Ladakh. Ladakh Birding Tour (8 days/7 nights)
In this tour, the main emphasis is on birding, so that you can spend as much time for your much-loved activity as possible. While observing the bird population, you may have the chance to spot other wild animals of Ladakh, too.
Day-to-day itinerary Day 1: Arrival in Leh. Pick-up by our staff at Leh airport, transfer to hotel. This is your acclimatization day on 3,500 m altitude. Afternoon sightseeing of Shanti Stupa, Tsemo Castle with car, explore Leh bazaar by foot. Evening at your leisure. Overnight in Leh hotel. Day 2: Visit some birding spots around Leh, like Shey, Thiksey, Chuchot and Spituk marshes. Night at the Hotel. Day 3: Drive to Tsokar Lake (170 km, 5 to 6 hrs). Evening nature walk around the lake to spot some birds. Overnight in Deluxe Camp or Hotel. Day 4: Around Tsokar Lake. We spend the day around this salted water lake, surrounded by barren mountains. Good chances to spot many mammals and birds of Ladakh. Overnight in Camp or Hotel. Day 5: Drive of 3 to 4 hours to Tso Moriri Lake via Polokongka-la (4,920 m) and Namshang-la (4,800 m). The Tso Moriri Lake is on an altitude of 4,520 m. During the entire drive we have good chances to spot birds and other wild animals. Overnight in Camp or Hotel. Day 6: Drive from Tso Moriri Lake to Hanle via Mahe (approx. 160 km, 4 to 5 hrs). Also on this drive, we have opportunity to see many birds or mammals of Ladakh. Overnight in local Home Stays. Day 7: Drive from Hanle to Leh (250 km, approx. 6 to 7 hrs). Very nice drive along the Indus River, spotting of birds possible. Overnight in Leh Hotel. Day 8: Departure from Leh with sweet memories from Ladakh. End of the tour. Birding & Cultural Tour In Ladakh (10 days/9 nights)
This amazing tour brings together your enthusiasm for birding and the rich culture of Ladakh. Fortress-like monasteries, the amazing landscape and its friendly people will give you an insight into the unique culture of the Himalayan region. While observing birds, you can also enjoy the landscape, spot wild animals, and take photos.
Day-to-day itinerary Day 1: Arrival in Leh, acclimatization on 3,500 m altitude. You will be received by our staff at Leh airport, transfer to hotel. Afternoon sightseeing of Shanti Stupa, Tsemo Castle with car. Explore Leh main bazaar by foot. Evening at your leisure. Overnight in Leh hotel. Day 2: Around Leh, sightseeing of Shey Castle, and Thiksey monastery as well as exploring nearby marshes for bird watching. Overnight at the Hotel. Day 3: Drive to Nubra valley via the world's highest motorable pass, Khardong-la (5600 m / 18,380 feet), to reach Deskit, the capital of Nubra Valley. Afternoon visit Nubra valley or Optional Activity (1-hour camel ride in sand dunes). Overnight in fixed Deluxe Camp / Hotel. Day 4: In the morning, visit the hot springs of Panamic, Samstanling monastery, and small volcanic crater lake near Tirisha. Drive back to Leh. Day 5: Drive to Tsokar Lake (150 km, 5 to 6 hrs drive) via Taglang-La. In the afternoon, nature walk around the lake to see some birds. Overnight in Deluxe Camp or Hotel. Day 6: At Tsokar Lake. Fair chances of seeing wild animals, and observing many birds. Overnight in Deluxe Camp or Hotel. Day 7: Enjoy the breakfast and explore the marshes for more birds as well as animals. In the late afternoon drive back to Leh . Overnight in Leh. Day 8: Drive to Pangong Lake (150 km). En route, visit Thiksey monastery. In the afternoon, birding and wildlife observation near Pangong Lake. Overnight at Pangong Camp or Hotel. Day 9: After breakfast, you will have more time for spotting birds. In the late morning drive back to Leh, en route visit Hemis. Spend the night in Hotel in Leh. Day 10: Departure from Leh with sweet memories from Ladakh. End of the tour. Birding Day Trips
The two day trips detailed below are especially prepared for those travelers coming to Ladakh for any reason who have an extra day at their disposal.
Day Trip In The Indus Belt
During this day tour, you will be exploring several birding hot spots along the Indus river, like Shey, Thiksey, Chuchot, Spituk marshes and Gufugs Lake. Please note: In this day trip you will be on an altitude between 3,300 and 3,350 m. The Indus Belt birding area is therefore little lower than Leh. Day Trip To Tso Kar
After breakfast, you will drive to Tso Kar (150 km, 5 to 6 hours drive) via Taglang-La. Nature walk around the lake to observe some birds. Late afternoon drive back to Leh. Please note: The Tso Kar Lake lies on an altitude of 4,400 m which is much higher than Leh. Kindly make sure that you have spend a couple of days in Ladakh before you embark to this destination. Snow Leopard Trek
The ideal time to observe the snow leopard is from mid-January to April. Mating season takes place usually during February and March. Places to observe this elusive animal are Hemis National Park, the South-facing side of the Ladakh Mountain Range, particularly Phyang, Stok/Matho, Shang Sumdo area, Ney Phu, the village of Tar, Ulley Phu, and the hills of Skindyang village.
While looking out for the snow leopard, there is also a good chance of spotting other wild animals, like Ibexes, Bharal or Blue Sheep (Napo), Urial Sheep (Shapo), or other predators, like the Red Fox, in Ladakhi known as watse, the Tibetan Wolf (shanku), or the Lynx. Smaller animals are also worth to observe, like the Palla's Cat, different pikas, marmots, resident birds, etc. |
