About Ladakh
The Union Territory of Ladakh is a Himalayan region in northern India. In the past, Ladakh gained importance from its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes, but as the Chinese authorities closed the borders between Tibet Autonomous Region and Ladakh in the 1960s, international trade dwindled. Since 1974, the Government of India has successfully encouraged tourism in Ladakh. As the Himalayan region is strategically important, the Indian military maintains a strong presence here.
The largest town in Ladakh is Leh, followed by Kargil, each of which headquarters a district. The Leh district contains the Indus, Shyok, and Nubra river valleys. The Kargil district contains the Suru, Dras and Zanskar river valleys. The main populated regions are the river valleys, but the gentle mountain slopes of Changtang in Eastern Ladakh also support the pastoral nomads. The main religious groups in the region are (mainly Shia) Muslims, (mainly Tibetan) Buddhists, Hindus, and others. Ladakh is one of the most sparsely populated regions in India. Its culture and history are closely related to that of Tibet. |

Ladakh is situated between two big Eco-zones, namely the Pale-Arctic and Indo-Malayan Eco-zones. Also Tibetan birds can be spotted here. The marshes of Ladakh attract different breeders. During spring and autumn migration, the region is an important place for aggregations of birds while crossing the lofty Himalayan range. Thanks to these different ornithological influences, Ladakh is a great place of bird movement. Until present, more than 300 bird species have been spotted here.
Depending on their respective time of occurrence, four bird groups can be identified within Ladakh: Resident birds, summer visiting birds, wintering birds, and migrants.
Hot spots for bird watching within the Tourist Circuit are the Suru Valley, Ulleytokpo area, Rumbak valley, Shey-Thiksey, Spituk, Chushot, and Choglamsar marshes, Nubra valley, Tsomoriri Lake, Puga-Sumdo Valley, and the Tsokar Plains.
